According to a recent report, 6 in 10 Spanish families prioritise their pet's wellbeing over their leisure plans. More than half would even give up their holiday before cutting back on their pet's care. That's not madness — that's loving someone deeply.

43% of pet owners consider their animal on a par with a child. And 32% now see this as entirely normal. Looked at that way, it makes perfect sense to protect them just as you would any other member of the household.

But affection doesn't pay the vet's bills. And when something unexpected happens — an emergency operation, an illness, an accident in the park — half of all families dip into their savings. Savings that, in many cases, were never meant for that purpose.

How much can a veterinary operation cost?

To give you a realistic idea: removing a tumour from a medium-sized dog can cost around €1,500 or more, depending on where and how. Cruciate ligament surgery on an active dog can easily exceed €2,000. And if we're talking about a cat with a urinary blockage — something more common than it might seem — the hospitalisation and treatment can reach €800 to €1,000.

These aren't unusual figures. They're the kind any vet in the area can confirm. And when the surprise arrives, the problem isn't just the money — it's having to make decisions about your pet's health while thinking about the cost.
